Outside Moody’s the heat of the day has waned but still holds a polluted gray-brown haze low in the atmosphere. Weiss stops on the sidewalk, watches the traffic.

Pearson steps up next to Weiss, file folder in hand. She pulls her purse over her head so it hangs across her chest.

“Thanks for the burger, officer.”

Her purse strap tugs at her blouse where it’s open, reveals a little lace. Weiss tries not to notice.

“My name’s Ray.”

“Just trying to keep it professional.”

“You’re asking me to solicit sex illegally in order to obtain information outside your jurisdiction. I think we can be on a first-name basis.”

“Just don’t get your picture posted on the PPA Web site.”

“That’d be a real career move: Ray Weiss, Prostitution Patron. My face up there with all the johns.” The site, a PR move for the department, hasn’t affected prostitution numbers; probably because the guys on the prowl for street whores use automobiles as search engines.

A cab turns the corner at Thorndale, comes toward them.

“You’ll call me in the morning?” she asks, stepping forward, flagging the cab with the file folder.

“Sooner if I can.”

“Sloane?” he says as she opens the cab’s door. “Thanks for letting me in on this.”

“Honestly, Ray? If we crack this, I’ll reconsider that date.” She gets in the cab, and as it slips in between southbound traffic and disappears, Weiss is a little bit sorry that he’s playing the game for another team.
